The organization Big Brothers Big Sisters is an incredible organization which I hold dearly as it personally touched my life as I volunteered to be a Big (a short name for a Big Brother) to a young brother in Miami for over two years in the program.
The organizations primary goal is to find mentors for children, teenagers and youths by simply being a friend that can hangout and have fun. My experience gave me a new teenage family member to share wise crack jokes, movies, sports and music with as I had experienced as a teen growing up. Though I must say that the term “brother” probably outgrew both our expectations, as we quickly found many things in common to build on, and a relationship which may or may not have been fueled by our natural sarcastic personality and ability to insult each other in creative brotherly ways =).
Whatever the glue may have been, the mentoring program worked surprisingly well both ways, giving me a chance to build a friendship with a much cooler dude than I was at that age and someone who I ultimately have come to respect as brothers eventually do. I am happy to say we still remain good friends to this day even outside of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program but we never would have grown the bond we did without it.
If you’d like to learn more about any mentoring opportunities in your area I whole heartily recommend you visit www.wementor.org and setup an interview to find a Little in your area who can teach you a thing or two along the way.
